Children’s holiday club – God’s Kingdom stories

A children’s worker wrote to ask for help to plan a children’s program. They wanted advice as to which stories were best for a set on ‘Kingdom’ including both Old and New Testament. Some suggestions were given.

After the children’s program in an area of southern Sydney, the children’s worker wrote back, “I’m pleased to say that the storying with the kids went really well. Our holiday kids program has been running for nearly 20 years, and comments have been that this has been the most direct and focused teaching.” Our holiday kids program has been running for nearly 20 years, and comments have been that this has been the most direct and focused teaching.”

“We certainly didn’t lose anything in terms of interest or fun with the kids. Ian and I together (more or less alternating) did the 8 story set of Saul, David, Solomon, Jesus Birth, Jesus Miracle, Kingdom Parable, Jesus death, New Creation (our theme was ‘Wonderful Kingdom’). Ian did 4 stories as a simple narration and he managed to get the kids to do the standard questions really well. I took on a persona and did balloon twisting with my stories and the kids were really engaged, though I struggled to get the kids to engage with the questions.”

We got on average 110 kids each day, and the storying in all ways was much more successful than the drama we normally do (I think so and many others agreed).

On the whole it is very successful with kids between Kindergarten and Grade 6.

“We’ll certainly be giving storying another go next year.”
