Deepening friendships through storytelling

When challenged on Monday to find a non-Christian to tell a story to this week, I thought of a friend I go cycling with. He rides into the city and sometimes I join him on my day off, we have a coffee in the city then he heads off to work. I texted him and arranged to join him yesterday morning, praying I could share a story with him.

Over coffee I told him about the weekend and he agreed to listen to a story. I wheeled out Abraham and Isaac on the mountain. He was visibly shocked by the idea that Abraham ‘feared’ God. He kept talking about that. He said he expected the Bible to say something like ‘loved God’. The idea of fearing God didn’t fit the theology he had from Sunday school 40 years ago.

The conversation following was great and a real turning point in our friendship.
