New Zealand Girl’s Brigade
The local Girls Brigade company has given me 6 weeks of teaching time (1.5 hours per week) with their Pioneers (13-17yr olds) and then 6 weeks with the Seniors (9-12yrs) this term. I am teaching stories from 2 Kings.
The first week I taught the story about King Ahaziah and Elijah to the 9 Pioneers and their two leaders. It went so well! They loved the part where the soldiers were incinerated! Some of the girls (ages 13-17) are very ‘hard to please’ and I was anxious about doing stories with them. When I was teaching the story two girls were making it obvious that they didn’t want to take part. Once they were in groups to practice the story however they were the ones who reminded the others what came next! I have given the girls the challenge to tell the story 3 times before next week.
Student Reflections:
* If I am in doubt I should ask God
* What God says will happen, will happen
* He has power over everything
* He doesn’t like to be ignored
* We should be nice to God’s holy men
* There is only one God who is really strong
* I need to trust God.
Last week we started by sharing about how the week went and more than half the group had told their story in the week! more than half the group had told their story in the week! Then I told/taught/studied the story of Elisha becoming Elijah’s replacement. They enjoyed how irritated Elisha was when the theological students reminded him that Elijah was going to be taken away from him.
Student Reflections:
* God has a purpose for everything
* He has power over life and death
* You can become his servant if you ask
* He speaks to people God does things to help people He loves
Tonight I told/taught/studied the story of Elisha throwing salt into Jericho’s water supply. They loved that it was so short! The bear mauling people excited them too – there will be more happy little brothers this week as they hear another action story! 🙂 (someone counted that there had been 145 deaths so far!)
Student Reflections:
* God performs miracles through His servants
* Even nature obeys God
* He backs up His servants He makes us stand up and listen
* God gives people power
* Don’t pick on people
* We shouldn’t get mad at people who bully us – leave it to God to sort out
* God will punish people who hurt you He will protect you
At the end of tonight we had time to talk about the method of studying a story. It was wonderful to hear the girls talk about how affirming the method is and how encouraged they felt to share. It was wonderful to hear the girls talk about how affirming the method is and how encouraged they felt to share. They were excited that they could learn from each other. It was such a privilege to be there and watch God at work!
Two of the girls in the group have no Church background at all. It is obvious that this is all new to them and they had LOTS of questions!
Used with F’s permission. She attended a training in 2010 and now is using storying and training others.
